Field Maintenance Procedures

Field Equipment Storage
The Ecton storage conex is located down the third base line at the upper field. The Merrick storage conex is located down the first base line at the upper field. Supplies to line the field are kept in the storage space below the scorer’s table at Lower Merrick. Ask your League Coordinator for the Lower Merrick storage and conex codes.

Daily Routine Before Practice (whoever has the field first that day)

  1. Install bases – Put tool and base plugs back in Conex.
  2. Lightly water skinned areas and baselines if needed (Upper Ecton and Upper Merrick only).
  3. If it rained overnight, wet areas will need to be dried and prepared. Please use sponges to remove standing water. Hand drag field with pull drag if needed. Contact Jarrod Arrasmith (859-494-4928) or another ELL Board member before using any field drying agents/materials.

Visiting Team/First Team on the Field – Routine Before Games

  1. Remove tarp(s) if necessary – Fold mound, home plate and field tarps. Put the smaller tarps on the roll.
  2. Dispose of trash found in and around dugouts and bleacher areas.
  3. Install bases – Put tool and base plugs back in Conex.
  4. If we had rain over night all wet areas will need to be dried and prepared. Contact Jarrod Arrasmith (859-494-4928) or another ELL Board member before using any field drying agents/materials.
  5. Hand drag field with pull drag, if needed.
  6. Lightly water skinned areas and baselines (Upper Ecton and Upper Merrick only).
  7. Line field, if necessary.
  8. Paint outfield lines, if necessary (no more than weekly)
  9. Put all tools back in Conex.

*If you take BP before game please do not use batter’s boxes, stand well behind home plate and use the black practice mat.

Home Team/Last Team on the Field – Routine After Games

  1. Pull bases and put in the Conex (Upper Ecton and Upper Merrick only). Put plugs in the base holes.
  2. Level areas around each bases and rake (aluminum rake with flat back).
  3. Rake mound and level if necessary (garden rake).
  4. Drag the skinned areas and baselines with broom/drag staying 1 foot away from grass areas. When raking baselines, please rake along baselines and not across. Raking across will push field material into the grass and create a lip.
  5. Rake the home plate area, leveling the batter’s boxes and filling any holes. The surface should slope away from home plate in all directions.
  6. Cover mound and home plate area with tarp and weigh tarp (wet down beforehand if needed).
  7. Do NOT put tarp on entire infield without approval from Jarrod Arrasmith (859-494-4928). See ELL Tarping Policy below.
  8. Put all tools back and lock Conex.
  9. Dispose of trash found in and around dugouts and bleacher areas.

ELL Tarping Policy

  • ELL will use its tarp sparingly and as appropriate in order to maximize game opportunities.
  • When it appears we will be able to play if field is tarped, we will tarp the field.
  • When it appears a rain out will occur no matter if the field is tarped or not, we will allow our fields to obtain the moisture they need.
  • No tarping is to take place without approval from Jarrod Arrasmith (859-494-4928).
  • The pitfalls of installing the tarp when not necessary are the following:  Grass and skinned areas do not receive needed moisture.  If sunny and above 50 and the tarp is installed, the grass will bake. This promotes fungus and algae within the grass bed.

Material Usage Policy

The mule mix field conditioner and the mound clay should be used as sparingly as possible. No more than 2 bags per field in order to be able to get a game in is the goal.  Mound clay as appropriate to maintain the mound and batter’s box. Contact Jarrod Arrasmith (859-494-4928) or another ELL Board member before using any field drying agents/materials.
